Subject:                          FSMTB CE Correspondence

Dear FSMTB Colleagues:

It has come to our attention that you may be in receipt of correspondence from Rick Rosen accompanied by his model regulations for continuing education. I am writing to address the confusion that has resulted and to provide clarification on a number of related matters. It is our desire that our members have accurate information with which to make informed decisions.

  1. Rick Rosen is not affiliated with the FSMTB, other than a brief period of employment several years ago when the FSMTB was initially formed.
  2. The FSMTB Model Practice Act (MPA) Task ForceA comprised of members of the regulatory community, is currently completing final revisions before releasing the MPA for public comment. The model regulations for continuing education in the massage therapy field disseminated by Rick Rosen is an individual work, not related to nor affiliated with the MPA.
  3. The FSMTB Professional Development Standards Task ForceB comprised of members of the regulatory community, is completing work on developing Standards for Professional Development. These Standards address continuing education that directly pertains to needs of the regulatory community and public protection. Once complete, the Standards will be submitted to the FSMTB License Renewal CommitteeC comprised of members of the regulatory community, for review.
  4. At the 2013 annual meeting of the FSMTB membership, the delegate assembly voted to create a Continuing Education Task ForceD comprised of members of the regulatory community, to further explore continuing education regulation, including approval sources. This Continuing Education Task Force will thoroughly and carefully consider all information pertaining to continuing education regulation before presenting their findings, conclusions and recommendations to you, the regulatory community.

In summary, State Boards are crafting their own solution. There are many individuals (see below) currently serving on their state licensing boards who are actively and earnestly working to provide a fair, practical and defensible continuing education/license renewal solution to meet the needs of the massage therapy regulatory community. Please consider the customized work product provided by the FSMTB members, task forces and committees, so that you may make fully informed decisions.
